Eating for your health and energy

Christa Riekert, Advisory Nutritionist

Whether your baby is yet to be born, or you have a new baby in the house, you need to make sure you’re in good shape! It’s not hard for you and your partner to neglect your own fitness with all the preparation, organising and caring there is to do, but if you’re not keeping your body nourished with good foods, you’ll lack energy and find things even harder! Make sure you look after each other and stick to a well balanced diet. If you need some extra tips, feel free to get in touch with our team at Kariclub.

The benefits of a well balanced diet

Many new dads can find themselves lacking in energy. So it’s more important than ever to be aware of keeping yourself fit, so that you can keep up with your new baby's needs and support your partner by sharing the workload and care routine. A nutritious and well balanced diet is the best start for getting the energy you need and can even improve your mood, concentration and memory.

What should new dads be eating?

To make sure you’re getting the right mix of nutrients, choose healthy foods from each of the four food groups every day. These include:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables – a good variety is best, eat at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit
  • Breads and cereals – such as bread, pasta, grains and cereals, eat at least six servings a day (try to choose wholegrain options)
  • Milk and milk products – such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, choose low or reduced fat options, eat at least two servings a day
  • Lean meat, poultry, seafood, legumes, nuts and seeds
