Ingredients:
• 200 ml water
• 4 scoops follow-on formula powder*
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 1 ½ level tablespoons (4 ½ teaspoons) coarse rice flour or ground rice
• Optional: ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
Method:
Saucepan method
Use a small whisk to combine the formula powder with the water in a measuring jug. Pour all but 50 ml of formula milk into a small saucepan and add sugar.
Whisk the rice flour into remaining 50 ml of formula milk.
Heat milk in saucepan, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, until just simmering.
Stir in rice mixture (use a rubber scraper to ensure it is all added). Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until boiling. Reduce heat to moderate and continue cooking and stirring until thickened – 1 ½ to 2 minutes.
Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. It thickens a little more on cooling.
Serve warm, as is, or thin slightly to suit baby. Or serve cold with cooked, puréed fruit. Try it with microwave-cooked, mashed banana – delicious!
