Finger Food Ideas

Lou
Hi All

I have a 9 month old little boy and he has just started to show interest with finger food ie picking foods up and putting them in his mouth. I want to try incourage him to try as many foods as possible at the moment i am not really sure what to try him with as scared to death of him choking. At the moment he has just tried cut up pieces of toast which he likes and i have also introduced rusks. I have tried cut up banana but he doesnt really seem interested in but will keep trying.
Does anyone have any suggestions of things i could try aswell as healthy snacks.

Thanks

You could also get one of those little tommy tippee net things that you chop the food up into and then they suck on to get the flavour.....saves the worry about choking!

My 9 month daughter loves frozen apples, and little sandwiches with jam or marmite and wine biscuits.

I havent had my baby yet but my cousin used to slice cucumber into long flat fingers. Great for teething and they traveled well as a snack. Since they are only water it didnt matter if it was dropped on clothes (or thrown somewhere) when she was out and about. No washing or clothing change required (by baby or her) :)

softening up veggies and giving these are good finger foods. dates, figs, bread dipped in humous, baked beans, pasta/pesto...
as long as it's not hard or small enough to gag on, give it a go.

Finger food is a great way to introduce a baby to new foods. Remember that children "eat with their eyes" as much as adults does, so make sure that it is colourful and includes a variety of foods. Cur foods into intersting shapes and arrange in a pattern - eating can be lots of fun!

My 10 month old loves pasta especially with cheese sauce on it, really messy but fun for bubs too LOL
Grated cheese, cocktail sausages, watermelon, rockmelon, sandwiches, all of what beachies said and anything you are eating really, just make sure it's softish.
Oh naughty I know but my bubs is eating a couple of twisties at the moment LOL

Hi Lou

Finger foods are fun and yes a great time to experiment with loads of different tastes and textures. Try - cooked peas, little chicken drums, fish/fish fingers, roasted veges, soft cooked brocolli, it really is unlimited. I always stay close by with the water cup as sometimes they may fill the mouths up too fast. This is a learning time for them. Keep trying foods that they may not be fond of as it can take up to 7 times!
