Bottle feeding bub

Date written 08/08/2011 21:56:42

I'm a mum of 2 boys and am currently 12 weeks pregnant with our third child. I was very lucky to have been able to breast feed both of my boys but know several women who weren't so fortunate and were made to feel terrible because of it. John Cambell had a story on last Friday night with several mums who for various reasons were unable to breast feed. One lady had had chemotherapy and was not physically able to breast feed and was given no help in hospital to bottle feed her new baby and was even told that she was opening her baby up to a range of childhood illnesses because she wasn't feeding it. This annoyed me so much that people are being treated like this so I started a facebook page called SUPPORTING BOTTLE FEEDING MUMS. I think it's about time people stopped judging mums on how they feed their babies and started supporting them more. Mums who for whatever reason are unable to breast feed need support, not to be made to feel as though they are doing the wrong thing. They love their babies just as much as breast feeding mums do. Please check out my facebook page and LIKE IT. Thank you.

Childcare

Date written 06/08/2011 17:20:36

I found going back to work the hardest thing about being a Mum. With my first child I stayed home until he was 4 years old, then used homebased care. My second child was born 8 years after the first so I decided to be the carer and set up my homebased business. Is anyone else struggling with decisions on daycare/homebased? Has anyone had great experiences using homebased like I have, the care is very personal that special person you choose builds a great relationship with you and your baby. My carer became one of my best friends and part of our family. I am now a homebased carer working with PORSE in Cambridge. If you need advice or need care for your baby let me know I have a vacancy coming up in September and would love to meet new Mums undecided about their childcare choices.

Breastfeeding a Jaundiced Newborn

Date written 04/04/2011 16:31:13

I had my baby girl in July 2010 and had decided while i was pregnant to breastfeed so all expectant after she was born we had skin to skin and she latched on beautifully the first try and fed for 45 minutes. I was so happy but little did i know the problems that were coming.

After that intial fed baby just would not feed. She was so sleepy that she wouldn't latch properly, would take a few sucks then fall asleep. It felt like all she did was sleep. The midwives rough handled me, told me i was doing it wrong, told me to strip her naked and change her napppies everytime she wanted to feed. I had to stay an extra night at the birthing centre then was shown how to prepare formula when i was sent home because she wasn't getting enough milk from me.

I spent the first 2 months of her life expressing milk because 5 days after we got home she got terrible jaundice and after the heel prick test to check her billirubin we were sent up to the hospital where they informed me that unless she improved under UV lights they would have to give her a blood transfusion. Lucky she did improve but we were there for a further 5 days. Just like at the birthing centre i was man handled and in the end given a bottle again.

Im proud to say though when i got home i persevered and after 2 months of bottle feeding her expressed milk she started latching on and drinking! I still can only breastfeed her lying down thats not really a bad thing, pretty relaxing. Moral of the story, just don't give up!
