What your crying baby is trying to say

DeborahSue, Advisory Service Manager

Newborn babies don’t have words to express themselves, so crying is your baby trying to let you know something, even if it’s simply wanting attention. On average, a baby cries 3-4 hours every 24 hours in the first few weeks of the newborn stage. As the weeks go by you’ll learn to tell whether their cries mean they’re hungry, tired or just want a cuddle. For more advice about your crying baby, just ask our team at Kariclub.

What to do when your baby cries

Some mums and dads worry that if they respond too quickly when their baby cries they will spoil them. However, research shows that when babies are responded to quickly, they actually cry less as toddlers. Comforting your crying baby quickly lets them know you are there for them, and makes them feel secure.

However, if your baby’s crying sounds unusual, for example high-pitched, piercing or weak sounding please contact your doctor.

Possible reasons for your baby’s cries

  • They’re hungry
  • They’re too hot or too cold
  • They have colic or wind
  • They need changing
  • They’re in pain
  • They’re bored
  • They’re over-stimulated
  • They want a cuddle

Most of these causes can be solved fairly quickly and easily and once responded to, your baby should soon settle again. However, if your baby’s crying seems unusual in some way or goes on for longer than seems normal, speak to your health care professional.
