The baby blues

The ‘baby blues’ can tend to occur somewhere between the third and tenth day after you’ve given birth. You’ll usually feel tearful and irritable, and it’s thought to be a result of both the remaining pregnancy hormones in your body and a feeling of anticlimax that can occur after giving birth. Plus, when everything’s new, it’s only natural that a lot of mums can feel a bit overwhelmed. It’s these times when it’s important to remember to care for yourself or seek care from those who can give it. Read on to find out more!

How long will it last?

In most circumstances, the baby blues won’t last longer than a few days. Lots of rest, reassurance and care from family and friends may be all you need to get through it. But if it continues after the tenth day, it may indicate you are experiencing more serious problems. If this occurs, it’s vital that you speak to your health care professional.

How your nearest and dearest can help

A good pair of ears and a big, warm cuddle from a loved one can sometimes be all you need when you’re feeling blue. Your partner especially will be needed to provide you plenty of patience and reassurance. Family and friends will no doubt also want to help you, so do take them up on their offers of help; even if that just means coming round for a cup of tea and a chat. It’s important they understand – and can help you understand – that lots of mums go through the same thing. Often, with this kind of support and care, you’ll start to see that there’s nothing you can’t handle about being a new mum, and you’ll find you’ll be fine in a few days.
