Alcohol and pregnancy

DeborahSue, Advisory Service Manager

We get lots of mums-to-be asking us about alcohol and whether it’s safe to drink during pregnancy. The fact is there is no known safe level for alcohol consumption at any stage during your pregnancy. For more advice about any aspect of alcohol and your pregnancy, just give us a call or refer to the NZFSA guidelines specifically for women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

What happens when you drink alcohol during pregnancy?

It’s worth remembering that any alcohol you drink during pregnancy will pass quickly through the placenta and be shared with your unborn baby. You may be surprised to know that it enters your baby’s bloodstream at around the same levels of concentration present in your blood, but it takes them twice as long to expel it from their system.

This means the only way a woman can be absolutely sure her baby will be safe from alcohol is to stay away from drinking alcohol during the whole of her pregnancy.

We’ll say it once more to be clear: the recommended level for alcohol in pregnancy is zero. It’s best to completely abstain for the sake of your baby.
