Tips on naming a baby

Start by writing a list of your favourite baby names! Keep it on hand and go back over it from time to time. You’ll find there are some names you no longer like and new ones that have popped into your head, so you’ll probably refresh your list several times. Don’t panic if you still have a few baby names to choose from as the due date draws closer. Many people can’t make the final choice until they actually see their baby and get to know their personality so it fits with the name. (Some even take a week or two to decide, which is fine. Your baby’s name is with them for life, so don’t let anyone rush you!)

Whatever you pick, it’s important that both your partner and you are in agreement over the chosen name and when to reveal it.

These additional tips should help you complete your list of baby names and make that all-important final choice:

  • There are many baby naming books and websites available which will give you ideas
  • Is there anyone you would like to remember? How about family naming traditions?
  • Short first names tend to go with longer surnames and vice versa
  • If you are choosing a middle name, try mixing and matching your chosen first and middle names. One name can sound quite different when put next to another
  • Say your chosen baby name over and over again to see how it feels – does it sound awkward, or does it roll off your tongue nicely?
  • Check to see how the name will sound if it’s shortened
  • Ask friends and family for inspiration
