Foods recommended to avoid during pregnancy

Christa Riekert, Advisory Nutritionist

Safer eating during pregnancy is recommended because of the risks associated with certain kinds of bacteria that can be found in some foods and food preparation areas. The best way to minimize risks associated with foods during pregnancy is to always hygienically prepare, store and handle food hygienically.

Listeria and Campylobacter are two kinds of bacteria that are found commonly in things found in the everyday environment around us, such as soil, on plants, or in water. They can occur in raw food or pre-made foods. Listeria can also grow on food in your fridge. Campylobacter tends to be found in meats and raw or unpasteurised milk products. After handling meats you are likely to have these bacteria on your hands which is why it is important to properly wash and dry your hands and chopping boards, utensils and anything else that may have been contaminated when you prepare foods so these bacteria don’t find their way into your system, and then your baby’s!

Foods that are freshly prepared, well washed and cooked thoroughly have less risk of harbouring these bacteria.

Foods that you should avoid during pregnancy because of potential bacteria being present include:

  • Soft and semi soft cheese
  • Raw seafood
  • Soft serve ice-cream
  • Unpasteurised dairy products
  • Cold processed meats /chicken
  • Prepared salads
  • Pate
  • Store bought salads
  • Pre-made salads, coleslaws, salad bars etc.
  • Sushi
  • Raw eggs and products containing raw eggs
  • Undercooked meats
