Your baby’s development

Over the last 9 months, your baby has developed from one cell to a little human made up of over 100 trillion cells. How amazing is that?

At birth, the average baby weighs around 3.2-3.5kg and measures between 48-52cm from head to toe. Inside, there is no spare room, so your baby can only move from side to side.

Did you know?

Did you know that when it comes to the estimated due date of your baby, only around 5% of babies are born on their exact due date? Many first time mothers are overdue, sometimes even two weeks late. So don’t panic if your baby decides not to appear right on cue – it’s normal for lots of expectant mums!

You & your body

You’re almost there and your baby is ready and waiting to be born! You probably can’t wait to give birth now – if only to be able to breathe and sleep properly again! There is some good news – once your baby’s head has engaged, you’ll feel less breathless because your lungs will be less pressured by your baby’s body.

Look out for the classic signs of labour – a ‘show’ from your vagina (ie. the mucus plug coming away) or your waters breaking and the start of real contractions.

See our Labour and Birth section for more information on the early signs of labour.

It is natural at this time to be feeling a little scared (or even completely terrified) about the birth. Most mums-to-be feel this way but we’ve got plenty of advice and tips on our website to help you get yourself ready, both mentally and physically. Meanwhile, your health care professional will be able to give you more detailed advice about the birth process.
